Oily fish is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, protein, iron, iodine, zinc and vitamin D. It is also low in saturated fat and in cholesterol. It truly is a super food!
What exactly counts as an oily fish and why should I give it to my toddler?
Oily fish includes fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna, trout and herring.
Oily fish is rich in many different vitamins and nutrients that are important for a growing child.
Vitamin D
Oily fish is one of the few foods that contain Vitamin D! In a country like Ireland where we get very little sun, added to the fact that children should be kept out of direct sunlight, it’s no wonder that studies have found toddlers aged 1 – 3 are deficient in Vitamin D. This nutrient is important for healthy bones and teeth!
Omega 3
The Omega3 fatty acid is super important for healthy brain development. It is also important to aid with good vision. Babies and toddlers go through massive cognitive changes in the first 3 years, so making sure that enough Omega3 is in their diet is very important.
Iodine
Another vitamin that helps with healthy brain development is iodine! This can be found is oily fish like salmon and tuna. It also helps children to grow big and strong.
Protein
Oily fish is also a great source of protein. Toddlers should have about 2 portions of protein a day to help proper development
How & When To give my child oily fish?
You can introduce oily fish into your child’s diet just after 6 months. Once you and your little one have mastered first tastes, you are good to go!
It is recommended to aim for 2 servings of oily fish a week.
A great source of oily fish and calcium is actually tinned salmon! Make sure it is completely blended for your baby before serving.
